How to Make Custom Ringtones for iPhone Using iTunes

On the other hand, if you don't want to use iMyFone TunesMate and you'd rather stick with using iTunes, you can use the method below. Before you follow these steps, make sure that the song you want to convert into a ringtone has been added to your iTunes library.

Step #1 - Open iTunes and, if the song is stored on your iPhone, connect your iPhone now.

Step #2 - Enter your iTunes library and locate the song that you want to use.

Step #3 - Right-click on the song and click on "Get Info".



Step #4 - When the info window has appeared, click on the "Options" tab. Check the boxes "Start Time" and "Stop Time", and set an appropriate 30-40 second time limit.

Note: ideally, your ringtone should be no longer than 40 seconds.



Step #5 - Press the "OK" button and when the window disappears. Open File menu, click on "Convert", then select "Create AAC Version".

Step #7 - When the finder window has shown, click on the M4A file and change the extension to M4R.

Step #8 - A warning will be shown on your screen. Click on "Use .m4r" and a newly created ringtone will be available.

After following these steps and creating the M4R file, you can delete the AAC version from iTunes and remove the time limit that we placed on the original file. All you have to do now is add the M4R file to iTunes as a ringtone and you're ready to go.
