Baidu’s Android app store has 2.88 million active users in Indonesia

Most of Indonesia’s web users spend time online using mobile devices. And while there are about 38.3 million active smartphone users in the country, that number will surpass 100 million by 2018. So it’s a big market to be in, and there’s huge opportunity to win the hearts of those upcoming smartphone users in Indonesia. Third-party Android app stores like Baidu’s MoboMarket want to tap into this lucrative industry. Mobomarket recently released Q4 2014 data:

  • 2.88 million monthly active users, most are in Jakarta, Bogor, and Depok
  • 265 million app downloads in Q4 2014
  • 517,000 listed apps

In the report, Baidu shares some interesting insights about its users’ behavior:

  • On average, each user downloads and updates 0.79 and 0.26 apps per day
  • Most users use low-end 4-inch devices with 800x480p resolution
  • The most popular app category is gaming, particularly casual games

Those are some nice stats for an app launched only in February 2014. Currently the store only lists free apps, but it is working with local telcos to launch a carrier billing mechanism in the future.

MoboMarket’s rivals in Indonesia include SingTel’s WePlay, XL’s Gudang Aplikasi, and Nampol. Google Play still reigns supreme as it comes pre-installed on most Android devices.
